Kix moved to Alaska to benefit his dad on an oil pipeline for just one summer and after that returned to Louisiana Tech to complete his schooling. Then he moved to Maine and wrote advertising to get a business owned by his sister and brother in law. His father encouraged him to pursue his desire to be a musician, and Kix moved to Nashville in the early 1980s. In 1990, his father and Ronnie Dunn formed Brooks & Dunn. His father was one half of country music duo Brooks & Dunn.
